Larry Achiampong, is a British Ghanaian artist who focuses on his personal heritage, and the difference between, pop culture and history. Born in 1984 in London, is now 39 years old. Achiampong, strips people down of their generic identities to their stereotypical identities. For someone like me I was brought up by white people and for years was unaware of my cultures traditions, I was even told to go to a therapy group for people who have identity crisis, witch I obviously rejected as my identity is depicted by I and I alone. I am here always struggled how society depicts black cultures. As I was explaining to a finite group of my peers;
Racism is derogative and hateful and we learn quickly from a young age to just accept it, because it will never go away.
I enjoyed the work of Larry Achiampong and his visualization of identity and identifying racism. Based on his performance piece and his response to the demeaning 'toy' that is the 'Golliwog', at first I thought of just what was on the surface of the piece. not for a second thinking about the making behind the controversial piece. I later realised that the blacked out orb helmets and massive bright red lips said a lot more about the work than I allowed myself to see visually, distracted by the distortedly symmetrical face and cartoonishly large lips painted in a loud red colour standing stark against the spherical shape.
My most effective piece I created in my previous project was my Larry Achiampong's 'Cloud' face and 'Speckle' style inspired images, it started of with an image of a collective of Asian flight attendants because of the similarities through race and how instead of 'black face' it focuses on racist stereotypes like 'yellow face'. I also looked at feminism for the collection. My pictures show the subjection of women, censoring but also exhibiting women.
