Using the Internet and the ridiculous amount of books I have hoarded, explaining 'how to sew a flat felled seam?'. For something so basic I wanted to try using my sewing machine and plan to again some time in the near future, so that I can wrap my head around the mechanical side of sewing more in depth. Right now, I find it easier to sew by hand, as I can take my time and have greater control as a beginner in sewing.

  1. Put two pieces of fabric together with the rough sides facing each other.

  2. Sew a straight line about 5/8 inch (1.5 cm) from the edge.

  3. Trim one side of the seam close to the stitches.

  4. Fold the other side over the trimmed edge, covering it completely.

  5. Iron it flat to keep it in place.

  6. Sew another line of stitches close to the folded edge, about 1/4 inch (6 mm) from the edge.

  7. Iron it one more time to make it flat and neat.

  8. It's done! It's a flat-felled seam, this creates a strong and neat seam, which is commonly used in sewing, especially for things like jeans.
